Day 1 (September 20, 2011)

Today, I went on a company visit to
PLDT, Mandaluyong
SPI Servisoft, Parañaque City

What I learned?
When we arrived at PLDT INNOLAB in Mandaluyong, we were briefed about PLDT and its current management by Ms. Anita Ferrer. INNOLAB means Innovation Laboratory and Telecommunications Education Center of PLDT. Through the guidance of Ms. Ferrer, we learned about the different ages of PLDT:
  • Age of Birth (1928-1938)
  • Age of Destruction (1939-1948)
  • Age of Hope (1949-1958)
  • Age of Chance (1959-1968)
  • Age of Control (1969-1978)
  • Age of Revolution (1979-1988)
  • Age of Gate Keeper (1989-1998)
  • Age of Transformation (1999-2008)
  • Age of Convergence (2009 and Beyond)
After that, we were given an IT lecture by Engr. Edmund Mamboyo and he discussed about the PLDT business in the past, in the present, and what it aims in the future. He discussed further about the basics of telecommunications, what it means and its early forms. We learned more about Simple, half duplex and full duplex.
In the afternoon, when we went to SPI Servisoft in Parañaque City, we were briefed about what SPI is. I learned more about Business Processing Outsourcing and that not all BPO companies have call centers in their company wherein they take incoming and outgoing calls. There are also companies like SPI whose core service is to provide their clients: Knowledge Processing Outsourcing and Customer Relationship Management. I also learned a little about networking and the Software Development Life Cycle Waterfall.

What I liked?
In our visit at PLDT INNOLAB, I liked the time when they showed us the products and services that they offers, and even demonstrated how to maneuver it, especially the one which lets you monitor the appliances in your house.
In our visit at SPI, I liked the tour that they gave us. They introduced us to every member of each department that they have. They also gave a little introduction about what they do in their department or team.

What I didn’t like?
What I did not like in our visit at PLDT is when we had an interview portion wherein Ms. Ferrer asked us questions and we were to answer her. We are still sleepy and a little dizzy from our early flight. The thorough discussion of PLDT’s history is boring for me and that is why I didn’t like it.
In our company visit at SPI in the afternoon, all of the speakers are fine for me except for the last one. I didn’t like him because he is boring and he did not seem as if he was sure and confident of what he is telling is. I don’t know if he was just shy or he is just not good at explaining things.
